A senior Al Houthi commander along with scores of the Iran-allied militia killed in fighting with the Yemeni army near the rebel-controlled capital Sana’a, military sources reported Tuesday.

The self-styled rebel “Death Battalion” surrendered to the government troops after the killing of its commander Jaber Al Muwaed, the sources added, according to Saudi television Al Arabiya.

The mass surrender came after clashes of more than 30 hours on the Nehim front north-east of Sana’a where the militia battalion had been besieged, they added.

Earlier this week, the Yemeni army, supported by an Arab military coalition, initiated a major offensive against

Al Houthis in the area of Nehim, the nearest front to Sana’a.

The government forces have since reported territorial progress. The Yemeni army said Monday it had recaptured mountainous series in Nehim from Al Houthis, forcing a mass escape among the rebels there.

In March, 2015, the Arab military coalition intervened in Yemen in response to a request from its government after Al Houthis advanced on the southern city of Aden, the country’s provisional capital.
