Yemen: Any consultations depends on implementation of the Stockholm Agreement‏

Yemen’s government has reiterated that the transition to any political consultations on a comprehensive settlement of the conflict depends on the implementation of the Stockholm Agreement.

“This is what the Security Council and the international community should work to achieve because those who do not abide by previous agreements will not comply with any new deals or political settlements,” it added.

Yemen’s permanent representative to the UN Abdullah al-Saadi announced Yemen's stance in his speech before the Security Council. 

He was also briefed on Thursday by UN envoy to Yemen Martin Griffiths on developments to achieve peace and the implementation of the Stockholm Agreement.

Saadi stressed that the legitimate government seeks to achieve sustainable peace and end people’s suffering as a result of the unjust war waged by the armed Houthi militias.

The legitimate government has “shown the utmost flexibility in implementing the Stockholm Agreement.”

" It also accepted Griffiths’ proposals to reach a political solution based on the three agreed terms of reference, namely the Gulf Initiative and its executive mechanism, outcomes of the Comprehensive National Dialogue Conference and relevant Security Council resolutions, mainly resolution 2216, ” he added. 

The militias feed on war and instability, he noted, adding that their approach is that of Iran, which supports these militias and is the main engine responsible for destabilizing Yemen and the region.

He also highlighted the importance of implementing the Stockholm Agreement, which represents a positive step towards achieving a comprehensive and sustainable peace.

In his speech, Saadi expressed the legitimacy’s full commitment to the agreement, while stressing that addressing the security and local authority issues is the gateway for any progress in the deal’s implementation.

He praised the efforts exerted by Chair of the Redeployment Coordination Committee (RCC) and Head of the United Nations Mission in support of the Hodeidah Agreement (UNMHA) Lieutenant General Abhijit Guha.

He said Guha has been exerting strenuous efforts to stabilize the ceasefire in Hodeidah and deploy observers on cross-lines and checkpoints, as agreed at the RCC’s sixth joint meeting.
