The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) said yesterday that 150,000 Yemeni children have been infected with cholera since the outbreak of the epidemic on April 27.

The number of suspected cases of cholera, to date, has reached 636,000, including 150,000 children under the age of five, the organization said in a tweet on its Twitter account.

Two thousand and 62 people were killed by the epidemic in the same period , it added.

According to UNICEF, about 40,000 local volunteers have treated some 250,000 children and elderly in all Yemeni provinces and have been cured of diarrhea.

Children under 5 years of age continue to suffer from malnutrition, which is most likely to be caused by food and drinking water contamination.

According to World Health Organization data, most people with the disease have been cured after receiving treatment at specialist centers.
