The United Nations confirmed that the convoy of its envoy to Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh was attacked by Yemeni demonstrators in the capital Sanaa.

"As far as I understand, the procession was thrown with eggs and other things, and shots were fired at the car that was carrying him," UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric told a news conference.

"Despite this attack, the UN envoy will continue his meetings with representatives of the General People's Congress Party in Sana'a as planned, as well as with the Houthis," Dujarric said.

"It is natural that the security and safety of United Nations personnel falls under the responsibility of the local authorities and therefore it is their responsibility to investigate the attack," he said, reiterating the international organization's call for all parties to engage constructively in negotiations on stopping violence and resuming peace talks.
