Yemen accuses Tehran of forming sectarian militias in the region‏

The legitimate Yemeni government welcomed on Monday the United States’ announcement that it has reimposed all United Nations sanctions against Iran, including an armed embargo against Tehran.

Information Minister Moammar al-Eryani said the Iranian regime had exploited the 2015 nuclear agreement to expand its hostile policies and spread terrorism, chaos and violence in order to destabilize the region.

He accused Tehran of forming sectarian militias, most notably the Houthis in Yemen and Hezbollah in Lebanon, and of providing them with weapons. He also accused Iran of supporting the al-Qaeda and ISIS terrorist groups.

The minister called for imposing more restrictions that would bar Iran from buying and exporting weapons that ultimately end up in the hands of sectarian militias and terrorist groups.

He urged the members of the United Nations and permanent and non-permanent members of the Security Council to assume their responsibilities towards the UN Charter in safeguarding international peace and security and therefore, putting a stop to the terrorist activities of the Iranian regime.

The United States announced on Saturday that UN sanctions against Iran are back in force and promised to punish those who violate them.

The sanctions were lifted in 2015 when Iran signed on to an international agreement not to seek to build nuclear weapons.
